Programs Overview

Through our training academy, Flashpoint Labs delivers a range of changemaking photography programs, workshops, coaching and events for people of all ages and skill levels. Changemaking photography is melding social innovation and photography, it’s trying to improve society through conscious image making and powerful storytelling.

Our programs use photography to engage people of all ages and skill levels in breakthrough learning experiences. In supportive and cohesive groups, participants are given the opportunity to learn about technical photography, strategic storytelling and social innovation while developing critical and systems thinking skills, creative expression and confidence. Our programs are informed by the latest research in empowerment and changemaking through digital media and by our own unique experiences and innovative approach.

Our programs and workshops focus on young people from diverse backgrounds, particularly young people from Indigenous and recently migrated communities. We now also offer custom and open programs and workshops to all.

Flagship Programs

Our Flagship Programs are focused on young people from diverse backgrounds, particularly young people from Indigenous and recently migrated communities. The next Flashpoint Labs Flagship Program is planned for the second half of 2014. To show your interest please fill in the following form:

Flashpoint Labs has run two flagship programs

Photolines - Indigenous Changemaking Photography: was a ten week program with 10 participants and two exhibitions, one as part of the Head On Photo Festival.

Two of the participants, Yale MacGillivray and Keisha Webb, became apprentices and now work with Flashpoint Labs alongside professional photographers to deliver on our corporate photography services.

Facilitators included: Paul McDonald, Natalie Hunfalvay, Sandy Edwards, Moshe Rosenzveig and Oliver Lang (Oggsie).

Big Picture - Indigenous Changemaking Photography: was a two week intensive program with seven participants and one exhibition at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence (NCIE).

One of the participants, Thomas Bassinder, became Flashpoint Labs's first apprentice photographer. Tom has completed more than 15 paid jobs for Flashpoint Labs and he is an aspiring young creative professional. Tom's story has been featured on the Indigenous program 'Move it Mob Style'.

Guides-by-the-side included: Natalie Hunfalvay, Saskia Wilson, Raquel Duron, Sam Hendel, Jack Bollero, Byron Keane, Davide Clune, Sophie Venardos and Kata Marno. See our blog post about them here.

Apprenticeship Program

Apprenticeship Program

Young people who have completed our Flagship Program can qualify to join our paid apprenticeship program. Sometimes we make exceptions.

The apprenticeship program is designed to be a flexible multi-year engagement with apprentices participating when there is an opportunity and when they want to. Apprentices that are accepted into the program are offered opportunities to work alongside professional photographers when the Flashpoint Labs Agency is delivering a commissioned job.

Apprentices learn the ins and outs of being a professional photographer, from professional photographers, on the job. Everything from how to work with clients, interpret a brief, find shooting angles, work with models and event participants, work with available light, work with studio lighting, work tethered to a laptop, work with programs such as CaptureOne, create an image workflow, edit and post-produce in Photoshop, deliver images to clients, invoice, maintain accounts, create a small business and much more!

It turns out learning to be a professional photographer means learning about art, design, technology, customer service and entrepreneurship. We are not just training apprentices to be professional photographers, we are preparing them for careers as creative professionals and changemakers. The knowledge they gain, the skills they practice and the confidence they build, provides them with a foundation for work in the 21st century.

At the moment we have 3 apprentices, Tom, Keisha and Yale. Together they have completed over 30 jobs, more than 100 hours of work and made over $4,000. They have gained invaluable industry experience and been paid for it.

To apply to be an apprentice complete the following form.
